COVID-19 Policy for Visiting Artists and Writers in Residence (AIR, WIR)
Updated May 30, 2020
The Caetani Centre takes the health, safety, and well being of our visiting artists and patrons seriously. The Society has taken steps to mitigate any COVID-19 exposure and we are moving forward positively.
In line with directions provided by the Public Health Agency of Canada and other leading health authorities, the Caetani Centre advises avoiding all non-essential travel at this time.
We are allowing residencies from within British Columbia to continue as planned, with the revised contract agreement, and proof of quarantining.
It is our understanding that International travel has yet to resume on a commercial basis, and that the borders are still closed between Canada, Europe, the USA, and other Canadian provinces indefinitely.
For those travelling from outside of British Columbia, we strongly recommend deferring your residency to another time period into 2021, or cancel until you can apply again. Even within British Columbia, ferry traffic from the islands are limited to essential travel only. Please double check travel advisories when considering your application dates.
Should the Government of Canada ease restrictions we will of course return to our previous method of operations, or a modified version.
You should be aware of travel restrictions, and watch for any developments or changes, as these may also fluctuate as things progress.
Please see the link below.
Travel and Health Advisory link:
There is a mandatory self-isolation period of at least 14 days for symptomatic visitors to Canada, with fines (and more) for noncompliance.
There is an ArriveCAN app that is downloadable from the above link.
The Centre will try to work as closely as possible with the individual applicant on a case by case basis to make their time here a success.
Our current COVID-19 policy for the Caetani Artist and Writers in Residence Program is as follows for the foreseeable future:
- NOTICE OF CANCELLATION
The Caetani Centre reserves the right to cancel or modify the conditions of any AIR bookings at any time. We will try to give as much notice as possible, but cannot guarantee a timeline.
Applicants will need to prove that they have isolated or quarantined (see travel restrictions).
If travelling from outside of the North Okanagan region or from within of the province of British Columbia, applicants will self-quarantine at the Caetani Centre for a minimum of 14 days as per the government of Canada guidelines and maintain physical and social distancing with staff and other occupants.
- PHYSICAL DISTANCING and PERSONAL INTERACTION
With 14 day quarantine rules still in place, the Caetani Centre must also consider personal interaction, even with physical social distancing, as the AIR and WIR residencies normally share a bathroom, kitchen and common areas, with only the studios and bedrooms as enclosed private spaces.
For the foreseeable future, residencies are thereby reduced from three possible shared residencies, to one occupant per booking time period only, to allow for quarantine, physical distancing, etc., so that normally shared facilities of kitchen, bathroom and common areas are no longer shared. Residents already booked will be notified of any change in this policy as the situation progresses.
- INDEPENDENT WORK
Residents will be expected to work completely independently, with minimal back up and interaction with staff. Our staffing levels are currently severely reduced to one part-time position during the COVID-19 situation.
- PRESENTATIONS AND EXHIBITIONS
There will be no public presentations, exhibitions, or events scheduled, unless these can be presented online. The Caetani Centre will not be able to offer public programming (presentations, performances, exhibitions) at this time, nor honorariums for sponsored AIR programs due to budgetary restrictions.
- FORCE MAJUERE
Both parties are freed from contractual obligation or liability to fulfill existing AIR/WIR contracts due to war, strikes, riots, crime, epidemic (pandemic), or any event that can be classified as an “act of god”.
The resident hereby agrees to hold The Caetani Cultural Centre Society, individual members thereof, and employees free and harmless from any loss, damage, liability, cost or expense that may arise during and related in any way by the use and occupancy of said facilities, to the extent such loss, damage, liability, cost or expense arise out of negligent acts or omissions of the resident or guest.
Our premises have been cleaned and disinfected to the best of our abilities, and we have taken steps to mitigate and minimize any exposure to the COVID-19 virus. The Caetani Centre will not be held liable for exposure.
All applicants must travel at their own risk and should ensure that they have adequate healthcare coverage.
The applicant will sign a waiver acknowledging acceptance of the above conditions, and is personally responsible for their own conduct and safety during their time at the residency. Residents intending to bring a partner must also have their partner acknowledge, sign off and guarantee that the partner will also abides by these guidelines.
Applicants will have the ability to cancel or defer their residencies as current circumstances continue to dictate, or if travel is further restricted.
We will refund your deposit if applicable, or we can hold this for another mutually agreed upon time period in the future. We will leave this choice up to the individual applicant.
We expect this policy to be in place for the foreseeable future.
Things may change between now and then, so we will try to be as responsive as possible.
Our schedule is fluid and changing regularly due to deferments and cancellations, so we will try to keep all applicants as informed as possible.
Thank you for your understanding during this challenging time.
