Jaymie Johnson is an installation artists visiting from Vancouver, BC who received her BFA from Emily Carr University. During her stay at the Caetani Centre, Jaymie will be focusing on creating a community engaged outdoor installation, semi-permanent in physicality, with an educational and ecological legacy within thecommunity. The intersection between art, ecology, and community is the focus of my practice which isrooted in an embodied mindfulness, a passion for food from seed to taste-bud, and a deepcuriosity and respect for the ecosystems which we are a part of.With a technical background in printmaking my practice has expanded to become aninterdisciplinary one in which site-specificity, social and environmental impact, and researchthrough observation, experimentation, and collaboration are of equal importance to form andaesthetics. My material practice is ever-evolving and includes sculpture, installation, communityengagement, printmaking, papermaking, drawing, mapping, walking, the use of andcollaboration with plant and earth materials, weaving of invasive plants, and most recentlypedagogy. With a process driven and durational approach, I utilize this variety of media toexplore our impact upon and relationship with the “natural” world. My current focus restsspecifically in plants: our connection and co-evolution with them; their culinary, medicinal, andenergetic properties; and the responsible use of invasive plants as art material.I am inspired by the notion of artist as connector and instigator of social change, and throughmy practice aim to invoke a simultaneously conceptual and visceral affect.
