Museum Workshop Series: Preserving Photographs
Our personal histories are often held within the pages of old scrapbooks, delicate letters, and cherished photographs. To ensure these memories survive for generations to come, the Caetani Cultural Centre is offering a special hands-on preservation workshop.
This session provides a professional introduction to “best practices” for caring for your personal photograph collections. You will learn about the common agents of deterioration, how to mitigate against them, and receive practical skills and archival materials to protect your own photograph. This is a “roll-up-your-sleeves” workshop where you will actually create museum-quality display housing for your photograph under the guidance of museum professionals. You’ll leave with your family photograph archivally mounted (by you!) and ready to be put in its frame.
Workshop Highlights:
Professional Guidance: Learn directly from the Caetani Centre’s resident Collections Management Coordinator.
Hands-on Skills: Master the do’s and don’ts of handling, storage, and display.
Custom Preservation: You will receive archival-quality materials to protect your specific photograph for display.
What to Bring: Please bring a photograph 8” by 11” or smaller, to accommodate the supplies we’ve prepared for the workshop.
Important Note: Please bring a photograph with minimal damage. Light conservation work will be offered at the workshop to the discretion of the Workshop Presenter.
For any questions or concerns about your photograph and what constitutes minimal damage, please email Jel Lentz, the Collections Management Coordinator with a picture of your photograph (front and back if possible), and your concerns, at intern@caetani.org
