Melody Sun

2025, Writer In Residence

While at Caetani, Melody is working on the first draft of her novel manuscript. It is a literary coming-of-age fiction exploring an intimate bond between two girls born in China in the 90s.

Growing up under the influence of the one-child policy, the protagonist and her best friend Z, both the only child of their families, form a sisterly relationship. They spend a lot of time together until high school, when the protagonist’s family brings her to Vancouver, Canada. With this drastic change of life, Z abruptly cuts her ties with the protagonist, leaving the protagonist in extreme agony and confusion.

Years later, Z reemerges into the protagonist's life, which brings the protagonist back to question her previous obsessions for Z – whether it’s platonic, romantic, or something in between. In her storytelling, Melody would like to challenge the boundary between platonic friendship and romantic relationships through the lens of a first-generation millennial immigrant.
